Largest Fancy Blue Diamond Goes to Auction June 2016
So exciting… the largest fancy intense blue diamond ever offered at auction will go under the hammer on June 9th 2016 at Christie’s New York for the ‘Magnificent Jewels & the Cullinan Dream’ auction.
It is anticipated that the 24.18-carat, VS2 diamond named the “Cullinan Dream” will fetch $23 million to $29 million, or up to $1.2 million per carat. The diamond is a cut-cornered rectangular mixed-cut set into a ring, flanked on either side by a tapered baguette-cut diamond weighing with a total weight of 2.36 carats.
The polished diamond originates from a 122.52 carat blue rough stone discovered at Petra Diamonds Cullinan mine in South Africa in June 2014. The magnificent diamond was sold in September 2014 into a cutting-and-polishing partnership in September 2014 for $23.5 million.
The end result of this deal was four polished blue diamonds with the ‘Cullinan Dream’ as the largest. The other three polished stones weighed 7 carats, 10.30 carats and 11.30 carats.
Another rough diamond that Petra also found at the Cullinan mine led to the creation of the 12.03-carat ‘Blue Moon,’ which sold for $48.5 million at Sotheby’s Geneva in November 2015.
